Venture is a 1972 Bristol 42 Offshore Trawler, an all-fiberglass Eldredge-McInnis design with the two-stateroom aft-cabin layout. She runs on twin 135 hp Perkins diesels, cruising at 8 knots with a 10 knot top speed. Recent work is listed below with years, and the known items are listed plainly so buyers and surveyors know where things stand.

An honest classic

Venture is a 1972 Bristol 42 with an unusual amount of her original equipment still aboard. The original binnacle compass is still there. The original 110-volt AC panel keeps its Simpson meters, and some of its labels still name gear that was replaced long ago, like the Onan power selector. The original Princess electric stove still works. The original Datamarine System 2300 depth sounder and the original Richardson Unipas Master Pilot autopilot controls are aboard too, along with a vintage antenna-current meter and a brass ship's bell on the mast. Her paperwork has stayed with her too: a tabbed binder of equipment manuals and the Perkins engine and parts books.

That makes her a good fit for a buyer who wants to restore a classic trawler rather than start from a stripped or over-modernized boat. Modern systems sit alongside the old ones: a lithium house battery with a Victron MultiPlus inverter/charger, Garmin chartplotters at both helms, on the flybridge and in the salon, and a working Westerbeke 8 kW generator, so she can be used while the restoration goes on.

Live aboard, and nearly ready to cruise

She is great for living aboard. The aft master has a queen berth, each stateroom has its own head, and she sleeps 6. The remodeled salon has a granite galley counter, the stove works, and the forward A/C unit works great. A 30-gallon holding tank, 150 gallons of fresh water, a lithium house battery with a Victron MultiPlus inverter/charger and a working Westerbeke generator cover day-to-day life aboard. She is at Soverel Harbour Marina in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

She is also very close to being ready to cruise. Both engines run, and she was cruised for several hours after the starboard engine got a new raw-water impeller; it held normal temperature. Now her port engine needs one. The generator works, the seacocks work, the cutlass bearings are new-ish, the stern davits are new, and there are two helm stations.

Beyond that port impeller, what is left before serious cruising is a short punch list, not a project: the aft A/C unit (it won't turn on) and the aft toilet (it won't flush). The soft decks, paint and rub rails in the list below are longer-term work.

The honest bad

  • Soft deck areas: not addressed. The January 2025 survey found soft, wet, flexing areas over the cockpit deck, both side decks and the foredeck around the cleats, and soft wood in a bulkhead in the starboard forward engine compartment and under the lower helm
  • The January 2025 pre-purchase survey rated her overall condition Average
  • Paint: needs new paint top and bottom
  • Port engine needs an impeller
  • Aft A/C unit won't turn on
  • Aft head: the toilet won't flush
  • Some rub rails are rotted and need replacing
  • Boom: removed after its connection bracket broke and stored aboard in the engine room. No replacement bracket is available, and riggers doubted it would work as a dinghy lift. Mast and boom are sold as is
  • Two solar panels (72" x 41") are mounted but not connected; there is no charge controller

Other items from the January 2025 pre-purchase survey

Not reported as addressed since.

  • No maintenance records were found; oil filters were dated 02/2023
  • Corroded hose clamps (waste, water-heater coolant, exhaust, packing glands); cracked galley drain hose
  • Corrosion on the port raw-water pump
  • Fuel lines labeled for compressed air; survey recommends USCG A1 hose
  • No DC overcurrent protection on the battery charger output
  • No shore-power source selector between the two inlets; AC main breakers not double-pole
  • Generator exhaust connections single-clamped
  • Both propellers slightly out of true
  • Engine-room insulation melted; no belt guards; no heat shields on the Racor bowls
